Taiwanese Church Planting Team
This current
church-planting work started in 2002 in cooperation with the Reformed
Presbyterian Church of Taiwan. In January of 2003, New Hope Christian
Fellowship was started in Taiwan's capital city, Taipei. In August of
that same year, Chidu Hope Church was started in the northeast port city
of Keelung. And finally in January of 2005, Lotus Hill Community
Church was started in HsiChi City halfway between Taipei and Keelung.

Current Ministry: The Lintons are working on building up the three church plants as well as surveying new areas for future work. Joel is also working towards recruiting and training Taiwanese nationals to partner with missionaries in targeting new areas for church planting.
Future MinistryThe
Lintons are seeking to recruit missionaries for two new teams: five
church-planting missionaries to focus on the Taiwanese-language areas
and five to focus on the Hakka-language areas. Joel has begun surveying
new target areas. For example, one area has a total population of
30,000 Taiwanese speakers living in 12 farming villages, yet currently
there are no churches in that entire region. |
The Team

One family, Joel & Judy Linton, currently serve in church
planting in North Taiwan. Joel is seeking to recruit church-planting
missionaries for two future teams—at least five to learn the Taiwanese
language and five to learn the Hakka language. Currently Joel works
with Taiwanese nationals in three Mandarin-speaking church plants in
North Taiwan—in Taipei City, in HsiChi City and in Keelung City.

Current Needs
We are happy to train missionary interns with a potential for longer term service in Taiwan. We also are praying for at least five ordained teaching elders to become church-planting missionaries to target Taiwanese-speaking areas and five ordained teaching elders to target Hakka-language areas in Taiwan. |
Cultural and Ministry Context
Taiwan is a wealthy, modernized nation of 23 million people. An island nation the size of Maryland with a high central mountain range, Taiwan is the second most densely populated nation in the world. It sits on the Pacific Rim with Japan and Korea to the north, China to the west, and the Philippines to the south. Because of its location, Taiwan has the third largest container shipping industry in the world. Because of its high tech industry and industrialized economy, Taiwan's major cities are cosmopolitan and international. Although the people are so internationally-focused with regard to the economy, Taiwanese are very traditional when it comes to religion. Most Taiwanese hold to traditional syncretistic Daoist, Buddhist, and Confucian beliefs, but some have exchanged them for modern secular materialism and the pursuit of wealth. Only about three percent of the population is Christian. Although most can speak some Mandarin, they are divided into three main language groups: Taiwanese-speakers (70 percent), Hakka-speakers (15 percent), Mandarin-speakers (15 percent). Among the Taiwanese-language speakers only about one percent are Christian; among the Hakka, 0.5 percent. There are more churches in the cities and among Mandarin-speakers. Each of these three Chinese-derived languages is mutually unintelligible, so new missionaries must choose which language to learn and focus on. | We are excited about your interest in a long-term commitment to missions service.
MTW uses a team-based approach to missions. For that reason, we actively seek missionaries from a variety of backgrounds—ordained or unordained, singles and families, men and women—and with many different ministry skills and interests.
Though MTW's first priority is church planting, we also have missionaries working in a variety of other ministries such as teaching, medicine, community development, and administration.
We currently have one- and two-year and long-term ministry opportunities in over 50 different countries around the world. You are needed on the mission field!

Taiwan: Hakka Chinese Outreach
· type: construction, evangelism, teaching English, vacation Bible school
· level: 3
· medical/political climate: intermediate risk
Teams will be working with an MTW missionary who is assisting the Hakka Council of Churches, a national group of churches whose purpose is to reach the 3,000,000 Hakka Chinese in Taiwan. The Hakka Chinese are the least reached with the gospel of any group on the island. The Hakka Council has 11 churches, most in various stages of church planting. The central city of this area is San Yi. Each of the pastors are eager to have teams help with their outreach ministries. While the total number is not limited, larger teams will be divided up into groups of approximately six to serve in different churches. Churches are about one to two hours apart. Each group will be matched up with a national (possibly from Christ's College) for translation purposes.
The outreach ministries could include vacation Bible school, a youth retreat, and possibly an English camp at the close of the two-week project, when all groups, teams, and churches will come together in a central place. Construction ministry, depending on the skill of the team, could range from yard work to building a children's playground and pavilion.
